There’s more to Langkawi than just the beaches. Several shades browner and a few not-inconsiderable pounds heavier, our roving writer spills the beans on five unforgettable - and slightly offbeat - dining experiences.

For my maiden meal in Langkawi, my hosts whisked me to an alfresco bistro cloaked in a lush tropical setting, Red Tomato Garden Café (Jalan Pantai Cenang, Tel: 012-513 6046).

Determined not to come across as a boorish guest (or what we Chinese term “hungry host”), I intended to have, at most, two slices of the flamkuchen or tarte flambé. This French specialty from Alsace didn’t seem terribly extraordinary - a stripped-down pizza with cream fraiche, cheese and choice of topping.

Sunset cruises are fun.

The 19-course BBQ dinner was delicious, the drinks beckoned from the open bar and the guests happily chatted away. But I could only look on morosely, wishing I wasn't so green from the rolling swells of the ocean.

Sea legs are not an asset of mine.

"That's it! I'm going to sell my house and we'll sail around the world on a yacht!" joked my partner.


Enjoy the saltwater Jacuzzi.
